Years ago there was a man that came into our life through an odd way. I remember a phone conversation he had with my husband where he was telling him he bought himself a talisman. It was a small little purse he could place items in and wear around his neck.

I was intrigued as I had heard of them but never really studied the meaning of.  I realized that I had my own which was a necklace I had been drawn to. I found when I wore it got me through a few tough situations magically. It somehow gave me strength, gave me the power to stand up for something, chase away a bad situation. A talisman symbol is believed to protect from harm against evil forces.

A talisman is used to attract a benefit to the owner and an amulet attracts good luck. Basically both interchangeable as both serve as a lucky charm. Years ago many people carried a rabbits’ foot or hung them in the their car. Many moons ago my husband and I were members of a local Lion’s club. At one of the meetings someone had a bunch of angels that clipped on your visor for luck for sale. We bought one for a friend who seemed to be having a lot of accidents lately. Something told me to get one for us, as well. As we left that night we placed it on the driver’s visor. The next day my husband was out and about in the car. He stopped at a red light at a four way stop that was minutes from our house. When the light changed green something made him hesitate and a take a double look before turning. Sure enough someone was speeding along that road that day and if he would have pulled out… Was it the angel? Was it the belief?

Today, three lucky charms some define as a talisman and some an amulet have seemed to surface in popularity. I started seeing them everywhere so naturally I had to start researching why. One is the red string bracelet, the other the Hamsa hand and the evil eye. The funny thing is whatever culture or belief you have whether Feng Shui, Christianity, Judaism or Islamic they all believe in them.

The red string is worn as a sign of protection, faith, strength, good luck and some believe a connection. The color red is a very auspicious color considered to attract abundance and wealth. You would wear it on the left side. The Hamsa hand symbolizes the hand of God, a protective sign. We all have heard of the evil eye. We might say I gave him the evil eye or maybe you were creeped out by a glare of a stranger. When you wear the evil eye charm it supposedly bounces that evil eye given to you back to the giver. Intriguing right? Who knows? It is worth a try, right? We all need to believe. We all need to keep the faith.
